This book is full of information about the environment and the impact humans have, but it really could have been half the size. The same information, examples, and concepts are repeated over and over, and it all could have been presented in a much more concise manner. The writing itself is overly wordy; even the topic headings are long-winded: "There Are Several Ways to Reduce Tropical Deforestation" could be "Reducing Tropical Deforestation." So many statistics are cited in this book, yet none are properly cited (there is no reference list, works cited, or even footnotes). For example, stating that America's high infant mortality rate is due to lack of healthcare access and maternal drug use is a bold statement that I feel requires citing empirical evidence (I work in the OB field, so I have some experience and knowledge related to this). It seems the author is trying to back up his/her position scientifically, yet is not using scientific methods to present the material. Some phrases seem misleading, like it's trying to make the situation sound more dire than it really is. It is a real shame, because this is important information. Trying to convince people of the need to act in environmentally sustainable ways will take more than citing ever-changing statistics without proper framing to put them into context.Product details

The book was in good condition when received. It was used as the description indicated it was. It was the exact book I needed for my college class.
There was no online code included. I did not need one for the class so this was no problem. I included this note as often I find myself searching to see if it is or is not included with textbooks.
This has been my go to reference book for ecology for 40 years since my first Human Ecology class in 1974 (first edition). It is not only accurate and informative but inspirational. This book was and still is one of the most important books on my library shelf.
Easy to understand ecological principles are illustrated throughout with charts, graphs, photos, side bars. Thank you G. Tyler Miller for all your years of dedication and scholarly achievement.You have certainly helped this planet and created awareness of our intimate connection and dependence on and with nature and all the earth system.
Considering the environmental crisis we now find ourselves in and the relative lack of meaningful reporting in the popular media, this book and a class around it should be a mandatory course and reading for all high school kids in America!
