Summer. 1939. Germany and Poland on the verge of war.
Since childhood, twenty-four-year-old Owen Linet has been plagued by bad dreams, or rather the same bad dream, of a man called Hector, who claims to be dead. Hector possesses a strange black cloak on which is stitched a series of golden symbols—“Words” that Hector, their “bearer”, claims have miraculous powers when spoken. Hector gifts a Word to Owen—one that he claims can not only take life, but also restore it.
Twenty-two-year-old Polish partisan, Jacek Tarasek, is ordered to follow a suspicious foreigner, a British artist named Owen Linet, who closely resembles a man from Jacek’s past—someone Jacek would just as soon forget. Jacek’s worst fears are soon realized when he learns that Owen is not only his avowed enemy, but something infinitely worse—a devil in human form, with the power to take life with a mere word. When Jacek can’t bring himself to destroy the man with whom he is falling deeply in love, he is forced to confront his flawed understanding of good and evil.
Beautiful to Behold is the first book in The Dark Brethren Series, but can be enjoyed as a stand-alone story.

Owen Adler, a young artist, travels to Poland for work shortly before the start of the Second World War. He meets an idealistic resistance fighter named Jacek and they enter into a complicated relationship. Owen's brother, a sadistic and manipulative SS major, wants Owen at his side and threatens his friends and family to that end. Owen and Jacek are trapped by the imminent invasion of Poland, and we learn that both are connected somehow to the servants of the lord Death.Beautiful to Behold is a mix of M/M romance, historical war drama and sci-fi/fantasy. The plot is original, dark and intricate (sometimes confusing).
Owen and Jacek are both flawed and complex. Owen in particular is a well developed character and likeable despite his flaws.
The sex is intense, without being overly explicit, and the romance is gritty.
My main complaint is that the book is too long. I would have preferred less attention on minor characters and sub-plots. It takes forever to get going. I nearly gave up a number of times and, by the 80% mark, I had lost interest in the welfare of the characters. I'm glad I persevered though. The ending was clever and satisfying, and worth the hours I spent reading. Questions I had from the start of the book were answered in the final chapters, with just enough unresolved plot elements to make me want to read the sequel.

Beautiful to Behold The Dark Brethren Series Book 1 edition by MD Wiselka Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I picked this book up looking for a light read to pass a few hours time. Wow, big mistake. The next thing I know, it's 6am in the morning and I'm actually in physical pain from having stayed up to finish. But what an awesome feeling---for me, a great story always leaves me feeling hollow at the end, it places this great ball of thoughts/emotions inside me that takes a few days to process.
1. As one reviewer said, the story is long. I was actually sucked in starting with the second chapter (when Owen is with his brother Ned) because the characterization of Owen there was just super interesting to me, so it didn't feel long to me, but I can see how it might take a while for the story to really get going for others (especially since we don't even get to Poland until after 10% on kindle). Having said this, the story is totally worth it. The writing in this book is quite taut so the length is not due to fluff. Incredibly, every scene manages to add something meaningful to the pattern the writer weaves.
2. I don't read much historical fiction, so I can't really judge how well this part of the novel was done. But let me just say that Warsaw felt like a real place to me. The depiction of the bars and the character Ziv especially stuck with me.
3. The development of the relationship between the two characters was very well done i.e. for a love story the chemistry is real and potent. There was very little manufactured angst which I hate (also very little of main characters doing stupid things to create plot elements which I also hate). I suppose, given the setting is 1939 Poland, that one does not need to manufacture any angst.
4. Beyond the romance aspect, it was just a joy getting to learn the background of these two characters and how they came to be as they are in this point in time. For me, the flashback to Owen and his brother Kurt, and when Owen and Jacek visit his mother's grave were especially effective in letting me understand these characters.
5. I think there may be some minor inconsistencies due to the treatment of time but these were relatively easy to ignore (and given the scope of the book, completely understandable). But again, I finished at 6am so by this time, my head hurt too much to think too deeply about this so in fact the author may have perfectly accounted for everything.
This was one of those rare works with strong characterization and strong plot (and the two actually synergize in that the plot uncovers the characters for us in a perfectly timed sequence!). With the amount of stuff published on kindle nowadays, it's really hard to sift through crap to get to those few gems. This is quite sad, because you know that there are so many great stories out there which have never been read, and which never will be read. I truly hope that this story gets the attention it's due.
Great read! Wasn't able to put the book down....looking forward to more from this author. Very happy w/ my purchase!
Wonderful read. Kept my attention. The love between Owen and Jacek was so profound! Can't Wait for the second book!!
The core of the story was excellent, but the plot, characters, timeline, etc. was a confusing mess. I struggled to finish the book. I would like to know what happens next... but not enough to slog through three more books. Maybe if a massive rewrite is announced, I'll pick them up.
I agreed with Nancy's comment about this book.
It's a long but engaging story that you want to keep on reading.
There are war history, obsession, romance and supernatural elements encompassed in the story. I really like the character of Owen. He is a caring, forgiving and sacrificial giving individual. This is not just a m/m romance but is equally a paranormal story so don't expect numerous explicit sex, which is always a plus for me - the lack of explicit sex, that is. On the romance side of the story the jump from Jacek been suspicious of Owen to loving him was pretty abrupt, and I didn't quiet get why Owen cared so much for Jacek.
Nothing can really be concluded about the story in the first book so I'm looking forward to the second one to see how things will turn out. The author surprised me in the first book when I though where the story would be going but a sudden twist threw it into a totally different direction.
By the way, I think the cover is fitting of how I imagine Jacek and especially Owen would look like.
