I've personally been to Europe now for a few short trips, and always with experienced Europe hoofers. I purchased this book because I'm planning my first solo extended visit. I found that the advice section is reasonably short, very readable, and full of useful information, some of which I did *not* find in other Europe guidebooks. As other reviewers noted, you can find most of this info in other places, but it is really nice to have it all in one book. It focuses on the traveler's planning and outlook more than specific destinations, which I personally think is a wise approach. Here are a few specific tips they give that I haven't seen in every other guidebook: Not the usual and painfully obvious "check the State Department and CDC websites about the countries you want to visit"; instead, it advises that the US State Department can be a bit overcautious and suggests to check with the UK and Aussie equivalents. Yes, you really do want travel insurance (and don't cheap out on it and possibly bankrupt your family if you have a serious accident over there). Bring earplugs, but leave your dress shoes at home. Bring too little and buy whatever else you need on the road--they do have stores over there. Take pictures of whatever you do bring, and photocopy your papers, then leave the pix and copies with a friend or relative; don't take them with you--they can FedEx them over to the nearest embassy if you need them. Good stuff overall in a reasonably sized book.Product details

The Rough Guide FirstTime Europe 8 Doug Lansky 9781848365117 Books Reviews
This was the first Rough Guide travel book I have bought and definitely the last! Planning a trip to Europe I was expecting travel advice for when I am IN Europe. Instead the first 17 chapters wrote about everything so basic as to what a passport is, how to pack your backpack to what to do with your plants before leaving. Give me a break! The book was so common sense that unless you have never stepped a foot outside your country it is a complete waste of reading time. After 17 chapters of useless content the rest of the book gave a 2-3 page synopsis of each European country with zero valuable travel information.
Luckily I bought Lonely Planet's Western Europe Travel Guide which is the size of a Bible with quality travel information. Again, this book is a total waste of money and offers absolutely no valuable travel advice for anyone traveling to Europe. Very disappointing!
This book is a great help and very practical! I Can't wait to try out all the helpful tips on our trip.
Have just about gone through the whole book and am impressed with the terrific ideas on travel. Will be going back through again to highlight this time!
Planning a trip to Europe and this book has become invaluable. It gives places to stay and suggested places to go. Even gives the Euro rate.
As the title suggests "first time Europe" is exactly for those of you who have had the desire but don't know where to start. The books charm is that is highlights everyday do's and don'ts and how to approach your journey. I would recommend this book to anybody who wants to go to Europe, for however long, that does not know where to start their planning. It separates itself from most other first-time travel books by advising you on how to prepare yourself mentally. I don't know if I would take to heart every point or piece of advice, but then again thats travelling, everybody does it differently.
This is a great book for planning your trip. There's tons of great information in here. The second half of the book has profiles of European countries that are really great for a quick idea of everything from climate to costs including languages, things to see, transportation, and the best and worst times to go. All of the tips in this book will help travelers make the most of their time abroad. While the book is definitely aimed towards backpackers, much of the information provided would be useful for anyone going to Europe. Don't think you can't get anything out of it if you're not spending three months backpacking through half the continent.
This book claims to be geared toward "novice travelers," but it is really geared toward students. It advises things like getting by with just a backpack; taking only one outfit and washing it every night (changing towns instead of outfits); saving money by hitchhiking (!) and sleeping on roofs; and has a sample note for preparing your parents for your trip (mine have been dead for years). If you're a college-age student, you might find this guide to be useful; otherwise, don't waste your money ~ I'm sorry that I bought it.
